What is the local currency?
Everywhere in Belize accepts US dollars. Belize does have its own currency, the Belize dollar (BZ$). We recommend carrying both local and US currency - US dollars are certainly easier to find internationally!
Should I change money before I go?
You’ll get the best rate if you change your money before you fly, so that’s what we recommend! Alternatively, you could do this at the airport, but you’re likely to get fewer dollars for your money!
Will I be able to draw money out when I get there or should I exchange money?
There will be some ATM’s in the towns that we visit, but they aren’t always easy to find! It’s also worth remembering that the withdrawal limit is $350 USD per day in Belize.
How much should I budget per day for extras?
Although there’s a lot included in your Flash Pack adventure, we recommend that you bring some extra cash for additional meals, drinks and any gifts or souvenirs.
Around $50 should be fine, but this is guidance only as you know your spending patterns better than we do. If you plan on buying gifts and souvenirs, you’ll need to budget for these too!
Is it customary to tip? If so, how much?
A tip of around $5-10 per day for the Pack Leader would be appreciated but is not at all compulsory. Many Flashpackers choose to keep a kitty and give this to the Pack Leader at the end of the trip.
For restaurants and bars, it’s normal to tip around 10%, but this is at your own discretion.
