Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats facing our planet, and it’s a completely man-made problem. The Flash Pack Foundation is committed to reducing plastic waste on our trips and there’s plenty of small changes that Flashpackers can make to be part of the global solution.
- Travel with a refillable water bottle
- Say no to plastic straws
- Bring a tote bag or backpack for shopping
- Bring plastic-free toiletries
- Avoid packaged toiletries in hotels.
As a Flashpacker, you should always travel with a refillable water bottle and where possible, refill your bottle instead of buying a single-use plastic one.
In countries where the tap water is safe to drink, we recommend filling up your bottle at the start of each day at your hotel. If the local drinking water is not safe to drink, we will do our best to provide a safe water source where you can fill up your water bottle. Despite our efforts, it’s currently not possible to eliminate plastic in all our destinations. In countries like Cuba, it’s difficult to provide a tank to fill up water bottles. In locations where we encounter these issues, we recommend that Flashpackers share a large bottle of water, rather than taking multiple single-use bottles. Our team in Cuba recycle all plastics, so make sure to leave your bottles on the coach so they can be reused.
New technology is making it even easier to ensure that drinking water is always available on your travels. Companies like Water to Go offer bottles with inbuilt filters that can turn any non-saltwater source into drinking water, so this is an option when travelling in countries without reliable water sources.
In many countries, it is still normal to provide drinks with a plastic straw. Flashpackers can help to break this habit by actively asking for a drink without a plastic straw.
It’s a great idea to bring your own tote bag or backpack when you go shopping on your adventure. Keeping a responsibly sourced bag on you is an easy way to stop using single-use plastic bags.
Bringing your own toiletries is a fantastic way to reduce the need for small plastic-packaged toiletries provided by most hotels. There are loads of plastic free alternatives out there such as naked shampoo bars, conditioners, soaps and exfoliants. We also love plastic-alternative products like bamboo toothbrushes and charcoal floss.
