Should I change money before I go?
You’ll get the best rate if you change your money before you fly, so that’s what we recommend!
If you need to, you’ll be able to change money at the airport or at a local bank. Most places in Guatemala will accept major credit cards and there are plenty of ATMs for withdrawing cash.
Will I be able to draw money out when I get there or should I exchange money?
Yes, you will be able to withdraw either US $ or Guatemalan Q at the airport and at ATMs in Guatemala. We advise carrying some local cash on you, but most places will also accept credit cards.
How much should I budget per day for extras?
Your budget really depends on your own spending habits, which you know better than we do! A budget of about $50 USD per day should be plenty, but if you plan on taking optional tours and buying gifts, you may want to increase this.
Is it customary to tip? If so, how much?
A tip of around 3-5 USD per day for the Pack Leader would be appreciated but is not at all compulsory. Many Flashpackers choose to keep a kitty and give this to the Pack Leader at the end of the trip.
For restaurants and bars, it’s normal to tip around 10%, but this is at your own discretion.
