What is the local currency?
The local currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD). Banknotes come in denominations of $5, $10, $20 and $50.
Should I change money before I go?
Credit cards are widely accepted in Canada, so there is no need to carry large sums of cash in the local currency. There will also be plenty of ATMs available throughout the trip.
Will I be able to draw money out when I get there or should I exchange money?
Yes, there will be cash machines available near all of the hotels on this trip.
How much should I budget per day for extras?
This really depends on your own spending habits. For the meals that are not included on this trip, a rough guide would be $15-25 for lunch and $50-100 for a formal dinner. In the evenings, a glass of wine or a pint of beer will cost around $8.
If you’re planning on buying gifts and souvenirs, remember to budget extra for these.
Is it customary to tip?
A tip of around $5-6 per day for the Pack Leader would be appreciated but is not at all compulsory. Many Flashpackers choose to keep a kitty and give this to the Pack Leader at the end of the trip.
For restaurants and bars, it’s normal to tip around 15%, but this is at your own discretion.
